Statement

Luis Vassallo’s work gravitates around painting and its history, generating a world filled of forms and references driven by a rich plastic imagination. His work can be seen as an updating of the avant-garde period, as an intimate genealogy of those movements and their different echoes in time.

Vassallo keeps an intuitive and heterodox attitude towards his practice and the study of art history as a form of resistance facing a highly institutionalized art dialectics. His work addresses the relationships between antiquity and avant-garde, between the self-referential nature of painting and its playful capacity to approach reality.

Exploring the singularity of painting and the visual abundance uncovered by the Isms, Vassallo envisions a medium capable of bringing together many layers of meaning with simplicity, while at the same time providing them with a depth of physical and emotional dimension.
